The Aquitaine region with its capital Bordeaux borders on the Atlantic coast. Aquitaine consists of the Dordogne, Gironde, Landes, Lot et Garonne and Pyrénées Atlantiques. It is a very diverse area with large forests, lowlands, rivers, mountains, beach and sea. It has a pleasant climate and the food is excellent.
Scattered here and there are picturesque villages, dozens of castles and bustling towns. There are many rivers that are ideal for swimming or canoeing. For walkers, cyclists and climbers there are more than enough sporting challenges.

The capital Bordeaux, world capital of wine, is located in the department of Gironde.
In the vicinity of the town you will find many thousands of producers of wines and a very large area with vineyards. 60 kilometers from Bordeaux, in the Bassin d'Arcachon on the Atlantic Coast, is a special sand dune, the Dune du Pyla.
Plenty of culture in the Aquitaine. This is the land of the Basques with a rich history that can be admired in the museums of Pau. Also the historic port city of Bayonne is worth a visit. This city is characterized by its unusual architecture with Basque influences, the Gothic cathedral and the monastery.

- The department of Dordogneis located in the north of the region. The boundaries of the current department correspond to those of the former province of Périgord. This province consists of the Périgord Vert, a hilly region crossed by small rivers, the Périgord Blanc, a region of limestone plateaux, wide valleys with large meadows, the Périgord Noir with its unspoilt landscapes of the valleys of the Vezere and the Dordogne and is named after the black truffle found here, and the Purple Perigord so named for the many vineyards, which extends around the wine town of Bergerac. The history of the Dordogne goes back to prehistoric times, that is why many caves with prehistoric cave drawings can be found. The capital of the Dordogne is Périgueux. Other beautiful towns in this department are Brantôme, Sarlat and Monpazier.

-Gironde, the region of Bordeaux has more than a thousand castles and no less than 120 kilometers of sandy beaches. The Médoc, Entre-Deux-Mers, Hautelande and Libournais are also beautiful areas in this department. In addition to its many castles the Medoc has a unique lighthouse and beautiful villages. In the Libournais lies the beautiful medieval town of Saint-Emilion wine, and in Entre-Deux-Mers and the Hautelande there are numerous (wine) castles to be found. In the south there are extensive pine forests with small streams.

-The Landes department, has as its capital Mont de Marsan and lies on the Gulf of Biscay. Many surfers come especially for the high waves of the Atlantic Ocean. Resorts like Biscarrosse, Mimizan, Hossegor, Labenne and Port-d'Albret are along the 106 km long sandy beach. Landes is a also woodland area. The Gallo-Roman city of Dax was the first Spa town of France.

-The Lot-et-Garonne is located south of the Dordogne and has thanks to the mild climate, the largest orchards in Europe. Lot-et-Garonne is also called the land of a thousand lakes and of the thousand orchards. Iin this region you will find picturesque villages and towns, with terraces on medieval market squares with ancient wooden halls, such as the bastide Villeréal from the 13th century, and Pujols, Castillones, Marmande and the capital Agen.

- Pyrénées-Atlantique is situated between the Pyrenees and the Landes. The capital is Pau, but cities like Saint-Jean-de-Luz and fashionable Biarritz are probably more familiar with holidaymakers. From Biarritz you can see looming in the distance the first foothills of the Pyrenees . In this city beautiful walks along the coast (all the way to border with the Basque Country) can be taken.

A holiday in Aquitaine is a must for anyone who enjoys good food and drink. Of course there are many Bordeaux and Médoc wines. And from the Perigord, Dordogne is a true delicacy, truffles.
The typical cuisine consists of poultry Landes from the spicy dishes of the Basque Country. These delicacies are drunk with a large number of regional wines.
