- The department of Dordogneis located in the north of the region. The boundaries of the current department correspond to those of the former province of Périgord. This province consists of the Périgord Vert, a hilly region crossed by small rivers, the Périgord Blanc, a region of limestone plateaux, wide valleys with large meadows, the Périgord Noir with its unspoilt landscapes of the valleys of the Vezere and the Dordogne and is named after the black truffle found here, and the Purple Perigord so named for the many vineyards, which extends around the wine town of Bergerac. The history of the Dordogne goes back to prehistoric times, that is why many caves with prehistoric cave drawings can be found. The capital of the Dordogne is Périgueux.
